The Langholm Common Riding always takes place on the last Friday in July. It starts at 5am as the flute band parades the town and ends at 9.30pm as the cornet hands back the flag in front of the town hall.  Two Hundred and forty-four years ago the three owners of the Ten Merk Lands of Langholm were parties . . . .

Cycling around Langholm

Flowing through Bent path, Langholm, Canonbie, Longtown and Newcastleton, the Esk and Liddle originate in the foothills of the Southern . . . .

Glengarth is situated in a quiet residential area of the old toon of

Langholm.  Shops, restaurants, bars and public transport are all within

easy walking distance. Glengarth is also just s few minutes stroll along

the beautiful river Esk to The Buccleuch centre where many talented

and famous performers and thespians are regularly billed.

Whilst our style is relaxed and informal we pride ourselves on

delivering a high quality service to all of our guests. Both our en suite

letting rooms are situated on the ground floor and thus we are able to

accommodate those who find stairs difficult. Langholm is ideally

located for exploring the borders on foot, by car or public transport.

We especially welcome walkers and cyclists.

We operate a very strict no smoking policy at Glengarth.

Langholm, known to the locals as the “Muckle Toon” meaning the big

town; was in days past  the largest town in the borders.  It is steeped

in Reiver history and that of the textile industry. It is from Langholm

Castle that the famous Johnnie Armstrong mounted his daring raid on

Carlisle Castle to rescue an equally daring and infamous Kilmont Willie.  Whilst their Reiving days are over the town retains many of those Reiver names such as Armstrong, Bell, Irving, Graham Maxwell and Hotson to name but a few, these days they welcome visitors to this very special town.

The Langholm Cycling Group have produced a guide to seven cycle routes on the quiet local roads that surround the town of Langholm . . . .

The eleventh Langholm Walking Festival is provisionally arranged for the weekend of 25th - 27th May 2012. On each day there is a selection of guided walks which will explore the beautiful countryside around Langholm. Evening entertainment will be available on Friday and Saturday.  The Langholm area is characterised by beautiful river valleys between green, rounded hills. The hills rise to 400-500 metres (1300-1600 feet) - many of them commanding magnificent views. The Festival walks usually range in length from 6.5km/4 miles up to 16km/10 miles.
